Apply to VIVA

Apply to Exhibit

The Valley Institute of Visual Art (VIVA) is a gallery run on a volunteer basis by local art organizations as a place to exhibit their art on a rotating basis. In other words, VIVA is a co-operative organization comprised of organizations, not individuals. However, if an individual wishes to show at VIVA, there are a few possibilities.

One way to show at VIVA is to join or belong to one of VIVA's affiliated organizations. As a member of one of our organizations, an individual has the opportunity to show, along with other members of that organization, when their turn comes to exhibit at VIVA. The four current organizations are: Collage Artists of America, Valley Artists Guild, Valley Watercolor Society and Women Painters West. Applications for membership are available at VIVA Gallery or by visiting their respective websites.

All organizations at VIVA jury their shows, so it is not guaranteed that any given member will be able to exhibit in every show. All member groups pay a fee when they hang their show. Occasionally, also for a fee, outside groups are invited to have their group show at VIVA. Representatives of art groups interested in showing at VIVA may inquire about the details of being approved for a show by leaving their name and information at the front desk at VIVA, or by emailing VIVA President, Susan Kuss at sukimonstercat@aol.com.

The second way to show at VIVA is to apply for a special group called The Salon (see below). VIVA has a portion of its gallery space allotted to this group. Salon members apply for annual membership and are juried in each year.

On a few special occasions, VIVA has invited a valued and renowned artist and member of the community to present an all-gallery one man/woman show. Honored in this way by VIVA, with retrospectives of their work, have been: George Labadie, Gene Inglis-Ward, Gerald Brommer, muralist Kent Twitchell, and photographer Gil Garcetti.

Apply to Host a Workshop

VIVA Gallery offers an exciting and diverse selection of instructional workshops in various styles and media in our educational Annex located adjacent to the VIVA Gallery. Some workshops are available through VIVA’s organizations, and others are hosted by independent teachers.

The Gallery workshop space is available for rental at very affordable prices to art instructors. For details, call Norm Beal at (818) 344-9241. Classes will be posted on our Workshop main page; instructors may also purchase an individual web page for a nominal fee.

Apply to the VIVA Salon

Each year approximately thirty artists from Southern California are selected to join the VIVA Salon. Exhibitions normally begin in January of each year for an annual fee of from $245 to $350 depending on available exhibition time. This is based on $35 per month. Sculptors may work on a consignment basis, which requires no initial fee, but involves a larger percentage donation. Applications are due by November 15th for the following year.

Download Application Form (2-page PDF), or stop by the gallery for a printed copy. Deadline 11/15/07. Email Dori Marler at artdori@aol.com for additional info.

Admission to the Salon is juried. To enter, please send a SASE with a bio and/or resume and either slides or a CD with JPG images of 4 recent artworks that best represent your style. Please read the application form for further details.

For those artists accepted, each monthly art entry must be hand delivered. Hanging works should not exceed 40 lbs. per unit and limited to 36 inches in width. A 30% commission will be charged on all sales of wall-hung artwork.

Sculptors must supply appropriate, self-supporting, pedestals. All artists will be responsible for delivering and picking up their work on the take-down day of each exhibit. This schedule must be adhered to as VIVA is not prepared to store artwork.
